The COSY accelerator and first pion production studies with the GEM detector system

The accelerator complex COSY is described and the presence status discussed. Results of different and total cross sections at 800 and 793 MeV/c are presented. The measured cross sections yield a smaller s-wave threshold than previous measurements taken at higher momenta
