Foratom, an advocate for an ambitious European energy policy

Foratom is a trade association for nuclear energy in Europe. Foratom gathers 15 European nuclear associations that represent 800 enterprises and about 800.000 jobs. Foratom recalls that nuclear energy supplies 50% of low-carbon electricity of the E.U. and that 90% of today's nuclear plants will have to be replaced by 2050 because of their age. According to Foratom, nuclear energy is absolutely necessary if the E.U. wants to comply with its commitment to cut by 80% its CO₂ releases, but the European Commission is unable to act in favor of nuclear energy due to discords between its members. Foratom backs the proposal to give financial incentives to investors in low-carbon energy field whatever the type of energy. Foratom has settled a task force to analyse the impact of the British abandon of the EURATOM treaty. (A.C.)
