Reduction of Np(VI) by hydroxy organic compounds

Description

Humic substances can complex and reduce actinide species. To clarify the redox chemistry, we have studied the reduction of Np(VI) by analogs of the humics. Spectrophotometry and solvent extraction were used to determine the kinetic expression for the reduction by three isomeric hydroxybenzoic acids (HBA). The reduction of NpO2+2 by the HBA was inhibited by anionic micelles but unaffected by cationic micelles. The organic products of the analogous reduction of Ce(IV) by o-HBA were identified by GC-MS measurements. All the results were consistent with a mechanism in which the redox reaction occurs by interaction of NpO2+2 with the phenolic group, resulting in the formation of phenoxy radicals
