Ionizing radiation-induced cancers. Experimental and clinical data
Description
This work attempts to give an idea of radiocarcinogenesis, both experimental and clinical. Experimentally the possibility of radio-induced cancer formation has considerable doctrinal importance since it proves without question the carcinogenetic effect of radiations, and also yields basis information on the essential constants implicated in its occurrence: need for a latency time varying with the animal species and technique used, but quite long in relation to the specific lifetime of each species; importance of a massive irradiation, more conducive to cancerisation as long as it produces no necroses liable to stop the formation of any subsequent neoplasia; finally, rarity of is occurrence. Clinically although the cause and effect relationship between treatment and cancer is sometimes difficult to establish categorically, the fact is that hundreds of particularly disturbing observations remain and from their number often emerges under well-defined circumstances, an undeniable clinical certainty. Most importantly these observation fix the criteria necessary for the possibility of a radioinduced cancer to arise, i.e: the notion of a prior irradiation; the appearance of a cancer in the irradiation area; serious tissue damage in relation with an excessive radiation dose; a long latency period between irradition and appearance of the cancer

Nous avons, dans ce travail, tente de donner un apercu de la radio-carcinogene tant experimentale que clinique. Sur le plan experimental, la possibilite de radio-cancerisation est d'une importance doctrinale considerable puisqu'elle demontre indiscutablement l'action carcinogenetique des radiations. Par ailleurs, elle apporte des elements fondamentaux quant aux constantes indispensables qu'elle implique dans sa survenue: - necessite d'un temps de latence de duree variable avec l'espece animale et la technique utilisee mais relativement long par rapport a la longevite specifique de chaque espece. - Importance d'une irradiation massive qui est plus favorable a la cancerisation a condition qu'elle n'entraine pas de necrose susceptible d'interdire la survenue de toute neoplasie ulterieure; - enfin la faible frequence avec laquelle elle se produit. Sur le plan clinique, s'il est parfois difficile d'etablir avec certitude le lien de cause a effet entre le traitement et le cancer, il n'en reste pas moins que des centaines d'observations demeurent particulierement troublantes et imposent souvent, de par leur nombre, dans des circonstances bien definies, une certitude clinique indeniable. Surtout, ces observations permettent de cerner les criteres indispensables pour evoquer un cancer radio-induit, c'est-a-dire: - la notion d'une irradiation anterieure, - l'apparition d'un cancer dans l'aire d'irradiation, - des dommages tissulaires importants en rapport avec une dose excessive de radiations, - un long temps de latence entre l'irradiation et l'apparition du cancerFiles
