Study of multicharged ions in the laser-produced plasmas

Description

With respect to hot plasmas, laser induced plasmas have an especially high density, with a steep partial gradient and a fast temporal variation of temperature and density. The study of multicharged ion radiation, wich is necessary to perform diagnostics of plasma parameters, opens a new field for atomic physics investigations, including identification of peculiar lines, which are not observed in other conditions, large changes in line profiles due to radiative transfer and to both shift and broadening by Stark effect. Departure from population equilibrium takes place in these plasmas, going possibly so far as population inversion between ionic levels in an energy range covering EUV and soft X-rays. Experimental and theoretical study of these phenomena are in progress and needs to find solutions for complicated problems. Here, recent works performed with the laser of the GRECO 'Interaction Laser-Matiere' are briefly presented

Abstract (French)

Parmi les plasmas chauds, les plasmas produits par laser ont pour caracteristiques une densite maximum tres elevee, presentant un fort gradient spatial, et une variation temporelle rapide de la temperature et de la densite. L'etude du rayonnement des ions multicharges, necessaire pour les diagnostics sur ces parametres, offre a la physique atomique un champ de recherche original comprenant notamment l'identification de raies non-observees dans d'autres conditions, d'importantes modifications du profil des raies spectrales par le transfert radiatif, l'elargissement et le deplacement par effet Stark. Ces plasmas sont le lieu de desequilibres de population, pouvant aller jusqu'a l'inversion entre deux niveaux d'un ion, dans un domaine d'energie s'etendant jusqu'a l'ultraviolet extreme ou aux rayons X mous. L'etude experimentale et theorique de ces phenomenes progresse mais necessite la solution de problemes complexes. Nous presentons succinctement les travaux effectues recemment dans ce domaine avec le laser du GRECO 'Interaction Laser-Matiere'
