Description

Thermal Luminescence (TL) dosimeters with small particle size, low cost and easy handling are some of the preferred choices of detectors which could be employed for the purpose of individual and environmental radiation monitoring of the cumulative dose over a wide range. CaSO4 doped with Dy has been reported to be the most sensitive in this series. Another interesting phosphor in this series is CaSO4: Eu, which too has been widely studied by several workers. Micro-crystalline and nano- crystalline forms of BaSO4: Eu have been reported to show satisfactory performance for measuring γ-my exposures. Nano crystalline BaSO4 is reportedly more sensitive than both microcrystalline BaSO4 and alanine over a wide range of gamma ray dose (0.4 Gy upto 1 kGy). The estimated values of critical level DCL and detection limit DDL values for nano-crystalline BaSO4 were found to be 0.08 and 0.16 Gy, respectively which are lower than that for alanine and micro-crystalline BaSO4. In this context, dosimetric studies on BaSO4: Eu have been carried out and the radiation induced radicals were characterized by techniques viz., Electron Spin Resonance (ESR), Thermally Stimulated Luminescence (TSL) and Photo Luminescence (PL)
