Latest eddy current applications in the nuclear industry
Description
Eddy current examinations of steam generators and condenser tubing are well-established in the nuclear industry. The applications of eddy current to critical service water heat exchanger components affected primarily by ID pitting are becoming a common practice. The use of eddy current as an alternative surface examination technique in the nuclear industry is also on the rise due to economic considerations. In contrast to liquid penetrant and magnetic particle testing, no extensive surface preparation is required. The eddy current examination is fast, sensitive to surface and near-surface flaws, and leave no chemically hazardous radioactive waste. These attributes make it an ideal candidate as an alternative surface examination technique. This paper reviews more recent eddy current applications involving service water heat exchangers, Class 1 and Class 2 pipe welds, and control rod drive mechanism (CRDM) nozzle penetrations
