Description
The trend of empirical interaction barriers and related parameters is explored for various heavy ion reaction systems for 100 < Z1Z2 < 1600. The empirical radius parameters from reaction cross sections differ significantly from those elastic scattering quarter points for Z1Z2 < 1000, but seem to approach one another for Z1Z2 > 1000. This behavior is shown to be consistent with predominantly refractive scattering for low Z1Z2 and dominance for surface absorption for Z1Z2 > 1000
