Description

The systematic study on the αα decay of the 70Ge compound nucleus has been continued with the crystal ball spectrometer. We demonstrate for the first time that the ''dip'' in the αα correlations decreases with increasing spin of the compound nucleus. This establishes a relationship between the ''dip'' and the lifetime of the compound nucleus. Together with the observation of a factor of 50 more 8Be(g.s.) from the compound nucleus (dsigma/dtheta approx.= const.) than predicted by a CASCADE calculation, these results are a strong evidence for a nuclear final state interaction between two evaporated α particles forming 8Be(g.s.).
