Possible charged particle studies of parity violation in compound nuclear resonances

Description
Recent studies have shown large parity-nonconserving (PNC) effects in epithermal neutron resonances in heavy nuclei. Analysis of these data treats the system as chaotic and the PNC matrix elements as random. The initial goal of such measurements is to determine Vrms. PNC measurements at resonances in lighter nuclei could provide additional information on Vrms and also study of a possible mass dependence of Vrms. To examine the feasibility of studying parity violation at proton resonances in nuclei in the A=20-40 region, calculations are being performed using measured resonance parameters. Relative merits of charged particle resonances for symmetry-breaking studies will be discussed, and preliminary results will be presented
