Corrosion of reactor grade uranium in aqueous solutions relevant to storage and transport

Description
The aqueous corrosion of Magnox fuel element grade uranium has been studied by the Central Electricity Generating Board to ensure safe storage and transport of Magnox fuel. The corrosion rate of irradiated uranium is related to temperature and to the degree of irradiation swelling. Information on the spallation of the corrosion product, the formation of uranium hydride and the release of fission and activation products is reported. The current understanding of the corrosion mechanism of uranium in pond and transport flask environments is discussed. (author)
