H- injection for the TRIUMF kaon facility

  • 1. TRIUMF, Vancouver, British Columbia

Description

TRIUMF proposes to construct a KAON Factory based on the acceleration of 100 μA of protons from 0.45 to 30 GeV by means of two synchrotrons. The first, the Booster synchrotron, would operate at 50 Hz and would be filled with protons accumulated in a storage ring of the same size and located in the same tunnel. This Accumulation ring in turn will be filled by protons injected continuously over ∼ 20 ms by stripping H- ions extracted from the TRIUMF cyclotron. Analytic calculations and a simulation program show that such accumulation is feasible and that a beam for Booster injection may be prepared by suitably programming changes in injected beam parameters and ring closed orbit position during injection. Such a technique should allow stripper lifetimes of several hours. The simulation program has also been used for brief studies on acceleration and on internal targets. The cyclotron must be modified to provide extracted H- beams. A program has started and electrostatic deflector efficiencies of 85% have been measured with beams of 20 μA equivalent current
