Identification of Bedrock as Reactor Foundation Candidate by Means of Geological Survey and Micro tremor Testing at Bangka Island

A survey on site and environmental data collection associate to site selection for a nuclear power plant installation has been conducted at Bangka Island. Based on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Safety Guide No. 50-SG-S9 titled: Site Survey for NPPs and the IAEA Safety Guide No.NS-G-3.3 titled: Evaluation of Seismic Hazards for Nuclear Power Plants, providing guidance on site selection aspects such as suitability of the lithology sub surface (stratigraphy) and seismicity. Purpose of the survey is to identify of the rock/soil type and its hardness, its oldness having suitability for reactor foundation or seeking for interest's area. The method used for geological surveys (mapping) are based on physical description (hand spacemen), rock outcrops (petrography) and frequency testing. Assessment and analysis on geological preliminary mapping containing data on rock composition. map geological structures and predominant period values may indicate the characteristics of rock local conditions. Results of the initial survey shown that areas having hardest rock outcrops, low weathering rate and the high value of the predominant period (showing the strength of rock) are areas of Simpang Rimba, Pantai Inggris. Pantai Penganak, Tanjung Pala, Teluk Klabat, Tanjung Tuing, Pulau Lepar dan Tanjung Berani. Pantai Inggris, Pantai Pala, Pantai Jebus. The data are expected as site database to input for site selection of nuclear power plant, especially at a later stage. (author)
