Elemental Analysis of some Egyptian Silver Coins in the Ottoman Empire Period

  • 1. Nuclear Research Center, AEA, (Egypt)

Description

Some silver Qirsh (10, 5 and 2 Qirshs) coins are analyzed by energy dispersive X-ray technique which is attached to the electron microscope unit. The X-ray spectrum of the coins showed Hg peaks in the surface of the 10 Qirsh coin. More inspection of the coin elemental composition by laser ablation which is attached to the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer identified amalgam silver as the method used in the production of these coins.
