Status of the 0+ nonet
Description
The phenomenological case is presented for a complete normal scalar nonet comprising delta(976) (I = 1), kappa(1250) (I = 1/2), S*(1000) and epsilon('1200') (I = 0), nonideally mixed (theta/sub S/ approximately 650 +- 50 as against theta/sup Ideal/ approximately 350), but seemingly respecting Zweig's rule in its hadronic decays. These decays, which go almost entirely to two-body S-wave final states, exhibit the inherent kinematic complications in a simple way. This is especially so for the delta and S* systems for each of which the resonance pole occurs just below the threshold of the strongly coupled K anti K channel. In the I = 0 system, to which the S* couples, the 'background' itself manifests resonance activity whose classification requires a scheme for describing overlapping resonances. The only natural prescription appears to be that of 'adding phase shifts' (strictly, multiplying Jost-functions); on applying it to the residual I = 0 dynamics the epsilon(900) and epsilon'(1250) effects coalesce into a single broad elastic resonance centered at or above 1100 MeV. This completes the tally of nonet candidates to whose hadronic decays a conventional SU(3) analysis is then applied. Some wider bearings of the resulting nonideal nonet structure are mentioned
