Neutron scattering study of magnetic and crystalline electirc field interactions in RCrO3

Description

Magnetic and crystalline electric field interactions in the compounds RCrO3 (R-rare earth) , were studied by neutron scattering. Elastic neutron scattering was utilized in the study of the temperature dependence of the Cr3+ and Ho3+ magnetic reflections in Lu CrO3 and HoCrO3, respectively. Analysis of this temperature dependence yielde constant canting angles for the Cr3+ and Ho3+ magnetic moments. Molecular magnetic field constants and crystalline electric field splitting were also calculated from the temperature dependence of the Ho3+ magnetic reflection. These parameters were obtained directly by inelastic neutron scattering measurement. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements of crystlline electric field transitions of R3+ (R=Pr, Nd, Tb, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb) in RCrO3, formed the basis for the calculation of the common crystalline electirc field parameters of the heavy R3+ ions.
