Characteristics of strong ground motions in the near field of small magnitude earthquakes

  • 1. Imperial College, London (United Kingdom)

Description

About 800 strong-motion instruments of different types had been installed in Europe and the Near-East since 1962 which have provided 200 recorded events at magnitudes of 3 to 6.5 with epicenter distances of between 5 and 30 km. Peaks of high acceleration and high frequency were commonly observed (at 5 to 10 Hz) although without any clear correlation between acceleration and destruction. It appeared that the effects due to the types of foundation and surface strata were substantial. It is recommended that structural calculations be done in terms of time-histories rather than using spectral methods in order to take account of the effects of signal peculiarities and wavelength
