Description

The 10 MWth reactor, SAPHIR, and the zero-power facility, PROTEUS, are the two research reactors operated by the Paul Scherrer Institute. Two papers related to the operational safety of these facilities were presented at the Intern. Symp. on Research Reator Safety, Operations and Modifications held at Chalk River, Canada, Oct 23-27, 1989. The contribution concerning SAPHIR addresses a particular aspect of reactor operation, viz. the development and application of a quick and efficient method for the detection of small fuel element defects via on-line γ-spectroscopy of the primary coolant. The paper related to PROTEUS, on the other hand, is an overall assessment of the safety-related experience acquired during the last 8-9 years, i.e., in the context of reactor configurations with tight plutonium-containing LWR test lattices.
