Analysis of replies to a questionnaire on the potential utilization of a proposed intermediate-energy neutron facility

Description

A study of novel techniques for the production of intermediate-energy neutrons, made with partial funding from the Commission of the European Communities, culminated in a proposal for an international facility giving a range of neutron energies, and based on an experimental high-flux reactor. This proposal, published in 1978 as a Euratom document was widely circulated. Concurrently, questionnaires were sent to 147 scientific establishments, mostly within Europe, in order to assess the extent to which such a facility would be utilized if it were available. Twenty-five laboratories indicated that they would use the facility with an aggregated requirement of over 500 days per year. Applications would be in the fields of physics, radiobiology and biophysics, health physics, instrument calibration, and radiotherapy. (author)
