Supercapatteries: a revolution in electrochemical energy storage systems

  • 1. Department of Chemistry, Chandernagore College, Hooghly (India)

Description

Renewable and sustainable energy generation, storage and utilization are one of the main factors restricting the rapid progress of the modem society. Fossil fuels, due to their restricted accessibility and significantly high environmental impacts have aroused considerable concerns and thus, extensive research has been focused to find suitable alternatives and more efficient ways especially to store energy efficiently from various renewable energy generation processes. In this regard, developments in electrochemical energy storage devices based on batteries and fuel cells have been proven to be very promising, although their low power densities and cyclic stability obstruct their random applications. Light weight, portable, less maintenance supercapacitors with high energy and power densities can even replace the conventional heavy-built batteries shortly. However, devising such supercapacitors faces some shortcomings and so in response to this demand, a new concept of supercapatteries (supercapacitors + batteries) has emerged taking the benefits of the charge storage mechanisms of both batteries and ECs to gain improved electrochemical performances. In the poster presentation, background for supercapattery development will be briefly discussed. In addition, fabrication aspects, suitability of electrode materials and electrolytes along with essential factors such as energy capacity, power capacity, cyclic efficiency, production costs that are crucial for optimizing the device performances shall also be focused
