Overview of nuclear transport studied on a French territory

Transport of radioactive materials is one of the most important activities in the nuclear industry. Compared to other activities which are fixed and localized, transport is mobile and can cross the whole country. A great part of the population is thus concerned by these operations, as they may be exposed to radiations released by transports' load. We will therefore focus on information that the public can have concerning nuclear transport, by focusing on a territory as a case study: the Manche department. Nuclear industry provides many jobs in the Manche department, and is a major factor of its economic development, but at the cost of nuclearization and thus radioactive releases and risks of nuclear accidents, making it a major topic of contradictions. The Manche department, which houses no less than three nuclear sites on its territory, including the AREVA NC plant, which has a key role in the nuclear fuel cycle, is particularly exposed to nuclear activities in comparison with the rest of France. In this work, we will deliver an overview of nuclear transport in the Manche department, determine the impact of legislation on the territory, studying the system of actors and the ways available to the public to be informed on radioactive material transports, through various institutions established for this purpose.
