Effect of the coupling of modes on the accessibility of ''low hybrid'' waves in a plasma

Description

It is now agreed that ohmic heating is insufficient for reaching ignition in fusion machines (for example, the TOKAMAKS). Very fast extra heating is required, i.e. quickly giving energy to the plasma particles. Two methods have been suggested for this: the injection of very energetic neutral particles or use of radio-frequency fields. Where the latter method is concerned, various frequency fields have been investigated: the cyclotron frequency of electrons (ECH), low hybrid frequency (LHH), cyclotron frequency of ions (ICH) and very low frequencies (TTMP, ALFVEN waves). This thesis aims to study certain problems raised by low hybrid heating. An accurate study is made of the propagation of the two hybrid modes in the plasma, the slow mode and the fast mode. The coupling phenomenon and its effects will be seen to appear. The results obtained will be used to describe the particular case where the radio-frequency source is a set of two guides mounted in phase opposition. (The experiments have shown that the optimum coupling conditions between the ''grid'' and the plasma are given by two guides in phase opposition or four monted with a π phase shift between two adjacent guides). This work affords a better understanding of propagation phenomena in the low hybrid field. It confirms the hypotheses made on surface waves and it shows the existence of an energy flux corresponding to a fast wave. In certain cases, this could give an interpretation for a part of the unrecovered energy, since the fast wave possesses too great a phase velocity to be able to release its enegy in the plasma in a short enough time to be efficient

Abstract (French)

Effet du couplage des modes sur l'accessibilite des ondes ''hybride basse'' dans un plasma. Il est a present admis que le chauffage ohmique est insuffisant pour atteindre l'ignition dans les machines a fusion (par exemple, les TOKAMAKS). Un chauffage additionnel tres rapide, c'est-a-dire donnant rapidement de l'energie aux particules du plasma, est necessaire. Pour cela deux methodes ont ete proposees: l'injection de faisceaux de particules neutres tres energetiques ou l'emploi de champs radio-frequences. Pour cette derniere methode, differents domaines de frequences ont ete etudies: la frequence cyclotron des electrons (ECH), la frequence hybride basse (LHH), la frequence cyclotron des ions (ICH) et des frequences tres basses (TTMP, ondes d'ALFVEN). Cette these a pour but l'etude de certains problemes poses par le chauffage a l'hybride basse. On etudie d'une facon precise la propagation des deux modes hybrides dans le plasma, le mode lent et le mode rapide. Nous verrons apparaitre le phenomene de couplage et ses consequences. Nous utiliserons les resultats obtenus pour decrire le cas particulier ou la source radiofrequence est un ensemble de deux guides montes en opposition de phase. (Les experiences ont montre que les conditions de couplage optima entre le ''grill'' et le plasma sont donnees par deux guides en opposition de phase ou quatre montes avec un dephasage de π entre deux guides adjacents). Ce travail apporte une meilleure comprehension des phenomenes de propagation dans le domaine de l'hybride basse. Il confirme les hypotheses faites sur les ondes de surface et il montre l'existence d'un flux d'energie correspondant a une onde rapide. Dans certains cas, cela pourra donner une interpretation pour une partie de l'energie non retrouvee car l'onde rapide a une vitesse de phase trop grande pour pouvoir ceder son energie au plasma en un temps suffisamment court pour etre efficace
