Description
During the middle of the years 1970 accelerators more and more giant have been developed to obtain higher and higher energies. The multicharged ions sources seem to offer an good alternative to this race. Today nearly all the accelerators are equipped with such sources, called ECRIS. The principle, the historical aspects and the applications of these sources are commented. (A.L.B.)
