Photocatalytic oxidation of SO2 with TiO2 nano-coating on silicon discs

Description

TiO2 nano-films were prepared by rotation coating method on silcon discs with Ti(OBu)4 sol as a precursor. The experiment of SO2 removal by photocatalytic oxidation was studied in a quartz reaction vessel. The covers of these films were investigated, and the photo catalytic oxidation of SO2 was studied. It was found that under certain conditions of UV irradiation, the oxidation removal of SO2 could be speeded up, with more than 95% of SO2 being removed within 120 minutes. In addition, ambience conditions of the photocatalytic oxidation of SO2 were studied, and the results showed that O2 in ambience could greatly affect SO2 oxidation. A layer of mucus covered on TiO2 nano-films was examined. The liquid product was analyzed by using pH detection and ion chromatography. A product of sulphuric acid was demonstrated in the solution generated after the mucus was washed away into vessels with water. This result showed that environmental pollutant SO2 could be removed by TiO2-based heterogeneous photocatalytic oxidation. As a development technique, its potential application prospects will be very good. . (authors)
