Identification techniques for nuclear particles in space plasma research and selected experimental results
Description
The paper reviews the development in instrumental techniques proposed for satellite applications since 1970. Instruments applicable to particle energies up to a few hundred MeV/ nucleon are discussed. Space plasma composition, space missions, ion composition are described, as well as the technical constraints which distinguish satellite instruments from laboratory equipment. Spectrometer systems used to determine particle identity are also outlined. The composition of the solar wind and the role of heavy ions in the Earth's magnetosphere are delineated. (U.K.)
