The nature of defects in semiconducting BaTiO3

Description
Direct evidence is presented for the presence of Ti3+ ions in semiconducting BaTiO3 using Auger electron spectroscopy studies. Samples were prepared by traditional solid state methods. Undoped and Nd- doped samples were subjected to several different heat treatments. The doublet feature of the L2M23M23 Auger transition was used to identify the oxidation state of titanium. It is also shown that the reduction of stoichiometric barium titanate also results in barium rich (possibly Ba2TiO4) phases at the surfaces and grain boundaries. Correlations between room temperature conductivity and the concentration of Ti3+ ions are presented
