Estimating of two different kinds of forest damage mechanisms in southeastern Finland. Pt. 1
Description
Pinus silvestris is a particularly suitable bioindicator, since it is widely distributed and sensitive to many air pollutants. In recent projects we have obtained results which support the so-called nitrogen-sulphur hypothesis. We suggest that the excess of nitrogen compounds like ammonia/ammonium, nitrogen oxides and nitrate together with gaseous sulphur compounds and anthropogenic acids, trigger severe forest damages. The basis of two different kinds of forest damage mechanisms seems to depend on the relationship of N- and S-compounds in ambient air as indicated by the different concentrations of total sulphur and nitrogen in the needles and the relationship thereof. Possible physiological mechanisms by which nitrogen compounds and sulfurcompounds can affect each other (e.g., changes in enzymatic activities) are discussed. (orig./UWA)

Weit verbreitet und empfindlich vielen Luftschadstoffen gegenueber, steht mit Pinus silvestris ein besonders geeigneter Bioindikator zur Verfuegung. Neuere Projekte brachten Ergebnisse, die die sogenannte Stickstoff/Schwefel-Hypothese unterstuetzen. Wir sehen es als wahrscheinlich an, dass ein Zuviel an Stickstoffverbindungen wie Ammoniak/Ammonium, Stickoxyden und Nitraten zusammen mit gasfoermigen Schwefelverbindungen ud anthropogenen Saeuren, starke Waldschaeden ausloest. Grundlage von zwei verschiedenen Arten von Waldschadensmechanismen scheint die gegenseitige Beziehung von N- und S-Verbindungen in der Atmosphaere zu sein, wie sie sich ausdrueckt in den verschiedenen Konzentrationen von Gesamtschwefel und -stickstoff in den Nadeln und die Beziehung beider zueinander. Die moeglichen physiologischen Mechanismen einer gegenseitigen Beeinflussung von N- und S-Verbindungen (z.B. ueber Enzymaktivitaetsaenderungen) werden diskutiert. (orig./UWA)Additional details
