Changes in structure, propertis and composition of surface layers of austenitic steel during vacuum heat treatment

Description

The effect of austenitic Cr-Mn steel annealing in dynamic vacuum (10-4 mmHg) at 700-800 deg C during 50-100 hours has been investigated by the methods of phase and microstructural analyses, Auger electron spectroscopy and magnetooptics. In steels, not containing Al, under such thermal treatment conditions Mn evaporation takes place and γ-α transformations in the surface layers, which become ferromagnetic, is observed. In steels with 1.5% of Al in the process of such vacuum annealing a thin (∼ 0.2 μm) film of aluminium oxide, preventing manganese evaporation, is formed
