Multiparticle production and the nature of the Pomeron

  • 1. Department of Theoretical Physics, University of Athens, Kouponia, Athens, Greece

Description

A mechanism for multiparticle production based on a two-component factorizable structure of the inclusive Pomeranchuk singularity is discussed. It is found that s-channel unitarity imposes restrictions on the detailed structure of the inclusive Pomeron. In fact, a hard component of the form (j - α/sub P/)-/sup-lambda/, 3 > or = lambda > or = 1 is not allowed, although a softer structure of the form (j - α/sub P/)-1 ln(j - α/sub P/) is consistent with s-channel unitarity and leads through self-consistency to the condition α/sub P/ = 1. The consequences of this last model for multiparticle production are discussed and the physical content of the model is explored
