Fixation of HAW and TRU waste in a ceramic matrix via a sol-gel process
Description
A sol-gel process, in principle developed for HTR fuel production, is utilized for the incorporation of fission products and α emitters in a ceramic matrix. The radioactive waste materials are coprecipitated by ammonia along with Al(OH)/sub 3/. After sintering of the precipitate, the waste is embedded in a highly dense Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ matrix. This material possesses excellent hydrolytic stability and, therefore, also outstanding resistance against leaching. Equipment for the realization of the process in hot cells has been already developed
