Description

The Paks plant in Hungary consists of four VVER-440s which started up in the 1980s and provide half of the country's electricity. The four main priorities of the management for future operation are examined. These are: meeting the opportunities and threats presented by deregulation and privatisation of the electricity supply industry; deciding whether to continue fuel cycle arrangements with Russia, entered into when the plant was built, in the light of Russian policy changes which will mean that waste is returned to the generator for disposal; addressing the problem of a sound financial basis for plant aging; the final phase of seismic safety upgrading.
