Transverse decoupling of hyperfine interactions in free atoms

Description

Decoupling experiments have usually been performed with the magnetic field along the alignment direction. A transverse decoupling effect can also be observed, which is rich in structure, if time-differential observations can be made. The hyperfine interactions in highly stripped calcium atoms have been investigated in a 55 kG transverse field from a superconducting magnet. The recoil distance method was used to make time-differential observations of the nuclear alignment. (Auth.)
