Proposed experiment to measure γ-rays from the thermal neutron capture of gadolinium

  • 1. Department of Physics, Okayama University, Okayama, 700-8530 (Japan)

Description

Gadolinium-157 (157Gd) has the largest thermal neutron capture cross section among any stable nuclei. The thermal neutron capture yields γ-ray cascade with total energy of about 8 MeV. Because of these characteristics, Gd is applied for the recent neutrino detectors. Here, we propose an experiment to measure the multiplicity and the angular correlation of γ-rays from the Gd neutron capture. With these information, we expect the improved identification of the Gd neutron capture.
