Description

A joint AERE Harwell/J.R.C. Petten irradiation experiment, which is currently being performed in the H.F.R. at Petten is presented. The assembly can accomodate a variety of, up to twenty-eight thermocouples, and can operate at a temperature of about 1500 deg C, under the influence of nuclear heating only. The operational performance is reviewed, as are the apparent trends, which have been observed, during the first ninety-five days of irradiation. The thermal dose received by the thermocouple units in this time is about 1.3x1021ncm-2. Provision is also made in the assembly, to introduce up to two new thermocouple units, at convenient reactor shutdowns, to enable the extent of the thermocouple drift to be estimated. One was installed after fifty-seven days of operation, and the second one will be installed after ninety-five days of operation
