Selective measurement of quantum coherences in trapped ions

Description
A new tomographic technique allowing the measurement of quantum coherences pertaining to a vibrational density operator of a trapped ion is reported. The key aspect of our scheme is that each density operator matrix element may be obtained in a direct and selective way, i.e. independently from the measurement of all the other elements. The experimental feasibility of our method is briefly discussed
