Prestressed concrete containment vessel
Description
In Japan, a prestressed concrete containment vessel (PCCV) is being constructed in Unit 2 of the Tsuruga Power Station, The Japan Atomic Power Company. This is followed in other nuclear power plants. It is described how the concrete structure plays its role in PCCV with special functional and performance requirements, along with an outline of PCCV. The concrete structure has to meet the requirements of pressure resistance, leakage prevention and radiation shielding. PCCV can be small in volume, itself serving as the outer shielding walls. PCCV in form is in two types, i.e. flat or semispherical dome; in Europe the former, and in the United States the latter recently. Concerning the aseismicity, the semispherical dome type appears to be advantageous. (Mori, K.)
