The new experimental phase of JET and prospects for future operation

Description

The upgrade of the Joint European Torus (JET) to install the Pumped Divertor (PD) machine configuration has recently been completed. The initial results from the JET-PD device are reviewed with emphasis on divertor issues; confinement and power threshold in H-mode; high βp plasmas; steady-state H-mode; high performance results and non-inductive current drive. Consequences for the future operation of JET are described. Finally, the JET programme in the near, medium and longer terms is discussed. (author). 33 refs, 21 figs, 1 tab
