Specific features of the licensing procedure for the decommissioning of the research reactor Munich

  • 1. Brenk Systemplanung GmbH, Aachen (Germany)

Description

The FRM was the first research reactor in Germany, the reactor was shut-down in 2000, is now in the post-operation status. In consequence of the reactor decommissioning the facility will not be completely deconstructed, the building is supposed to be integrated into the FRM-II. Due to the regulations of monument conservation the external structure of the building cannot be modified. The authors describe the licensing application, the concept for the reactor dismantling, the deconstruction of activated metallic parts, the deconstruction of the irradiation facilities, the decontamination of the reactor hall and the ring building. Low-level radioactive water will be transferred to FRM-II. The accident issue covers scenarios that could induce fission product release into the environment: fire, leakage of radioactive material containing tanks, supply equipment failures, external impacts (earth quakes, flooding, storms, explosions).
