Hydroxide compounds of Pu(V)
Creators
Description
Crystalline difficulty soluble hydroxide compounds of Pu(V) of various composition are isolated in LiOH, KOH, and RbOH media at base concentrations of at least 4 M by reduction of Pu(VI) to Pu(V) by formaldehyde or KI. X-ray phase analysis demonstrated that salts of general formula PuO2(OH)2 · xH2O or M2PuO2(OH)3 · xH2O are formed under these conditions depending on [MOH] (M = Li, K, Rb), coagulation time, and temperature of the reaction mixture. The preparation of these compounds is the first confirmatory evidence of the existence of Pu(V) in basic media as PuO2(OH)2 and PuO2(OH)32-
