Attenuation of beta detection efficiency with varying massic concentration of Sr and Ca in sample matrix

Description
Determination of low levels of 90Sr in environmental samples is done by standard radiochemical procedure where finally strontium is precipitated as SrCO3 activity quantification of 90Sr is done using beta counting system where efficiency of the detector used for the calculations is determined using 90Sr-90Y standard source. This efficiency can vary with the thickness of the precipitate used for counting owing to attenuation of beta particles in the source. Differences in precipitate thickness of standard source from that of sample source, introduces error in activity calculation. This error is alleviated by generating a efficiency calibration curve, for source containing known amount of radionuclide with varying levels of attenuation. The differences in attenuation of the beta energy for two matrices CaCl2 and SrCO3 in two different counting systems were compared. (author)
