Description

The oxidation kinetics of Zircaloy-4 under D2O steam has been long assumed to behave similarly to H2O steam, which has been used in previous assessments. This work presents an experimental campaign to measure oxidation kinetics of CANDU Zircaloy-4 cladding in light and heavy water steam environments from 500 °C to 1250 °C to determine the validity of this assumption. Experiments were performed via thermogravimetric analysis of Zircaloy-4 samples to measure the mass change and oxidation kinetic rates. Measurements under light water steam were benchmarked to previously reported values to give confidence in the approach. (author)
