Solid oxide cells (SOFC/SOEC) for energy generation - ARCI perspective

  • 1. International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials, Balapur P.O., Hyderabad-500005 (India)

Description

Based on the extensive experience of ARCI in the field of ceramic honeycomb technology development, up-scaling and transfer, novel anode supported ceramic honeycomb solid oxide fuel has been developed and tested. Honeycomb-supported SOFC is known as one of the most compact SOFCs due to the large electrode area per unit volume, which is attractive with regard to space saving and cost reduction. In this study, design of the channel shape, size, and sequence to realize the designed honeycomb SOFC fabrication were summarized. We have succeeded in fabricating anode-supported honeycomb SOFC via extrusion of NiO-8YSZ honeycomb monolith and through the use of a new dip coating method for the channel surface coating using electrolyte/cathode bi-layers. A co-sintering method is optimized to sinter porous NiO-8YSZ anode honeycomb substrates along with 8YSZ electrolyte layer. A dense and thin electrolyte layer is established using solid loading of electrolyte slurry. Porous LSM coating with uniform distribution of pores was obtained with the optimized coating methodology. Anode supported solid oxide fuel cell first module was tested to prove the concept in the intermediate temperature regime. Additionally, high performance SOFC components such as electrolytes, cathodes and anode were also developed. Recently, ARCI started establishing a pilot scale facility to develop anode supported solid oxide fuel cell stack and system jointly with CGCRI & HPCL. The developed stacks are also used to build SOEC systems for H2 generation in addition to using the stacks for energy generation. Details will be presented during the talk.
