Description
Physical processes in multi-step avalanche chambers, detector properties, and difficulties in operation are discussed. Advantages of multi-step chambers over classical MWPCs for specific experimental problems encountered in experiment E605 (high-flux environment and Cherenkov imaging) are described. Some details of detector design are presented. (orig.)
