Galvanic and crevice corrosion effects in Magnox A180 alloy
Description
The corrosion of pre-oxidized and citric acid etched Magnox (A 180) in caustic solution pH 11.6 was examined in the laboratory at room temperature. The influence of crevices formed between Magnox and mild steel or Magnox and PTFE were studied for a range of caustic solutions to which has been added small amounts of chloride, sulphate and silicate ions. Galvanic corrosion currents between etched Magnox and mild steel without creviced areas in chloride-dosed caustic solutions were recorded. Corrosion potential measurements were made on four irradiated Magnox fuel elements stored in a fuel skip with defective paint in the BNL pond over 300 days. (author)
