Emergencies in pediatric oncology

Description
Fifty years ago only children with a "surgically curable" cancer would have survive their disease. Now, over two-thirds of all children in high-income countries are expected to become long term survivors. The prognosis has also changed dramatically with the recent advance in supportive care. The aim of this article is to describe principles of prevention and treatment of the most common initial emergencies in pediatric oncology. Theoretical description is supplement with case reports of our patients currently treated and followed up at the Department of Paediatric Haematology and Oncology in Bratislava. (author)
