Description

Preparation and thermal studies of (NH4)4ThF8 and (NH4)4UF8 in the region 100-900 degC reveal that stabilization of single phased tetra-ammonium actinide octafluorocompound and its decomposition to lower fluorocompounds is governed by atmospheric conditions. Further, unlike in (NH4)4ThF8, the heating of (NH4)4UF8 in dry air at 400 degC resulted in formation of UO2F2 due to preferred oxidation of U4+---U6+ in (NH4)4UF8 at 80 degC leading to formation of (NH4)3UO2F5.
