Decontamination heat-exchange equipment enhances personnel safety for maintenance
Description
Radioactivity presents the biggest obstacle in maintaining a nuclear steam-supply system. Maintenance of the regenerative heat exchange (RHX) at the Philadelphia Electric Co's Peach Bottom station is preceded by chemical decontamination. The process, although costly, is estimated to have saved a total of 900 man-rem of radiation exposure. The attempts to seal the RHX and then to decontaminate them chemically are described. The parameters for decontamination with NS-1 were an operating temperature of 250-260F at 100-125 gpm flow rate. Working pressure of the system was calculated to be 30 psig vapor pressure plus 40 psig pump head
