Description

This paper reports on the total reaction cross sections that were measured for 11Be at 33 MeV/u. Large nucleon-nucleon cross sections in this energy domain afforded an enormous sensitivity of the measured cross sections to diffused density of nuclear surface. Anomalously large total reaction cross sections were observed, and the 11Be density distribution with a neutron halo was found to reproduce the cross sections quite well by Glauber-type calculation. Large fragmentation cross sections of 11Be to 10Be, which occupy about 30% of the total cross sections, were also observed in the same measurement. These results all combined provide a strong indication of a neutron halo in 11Be
