PHA-P modification of the kinetics of Cl--pH equilibration after in vitro gamma irradiation of red blood cells

Description
Red blood cells were irradiated in vitro with gamma rays with a dosage of 300 and 500 Gy. The kinetics of Cl-/HCO3-exchange corresponding to the pH value was monitored at different postirradiation periods after the transfer of erythrocytes from saline to isotonic sucrose solution. Gamma irradiation led to an increase of ion exchange markedly expressed in the time of postirradiation incubation. The pH curves were analyzed in order to elucidate the erythrocyte membrane radiation damage. PHA-P treatment showed a significant radioprotective effect of lectin. (author)
