Utilizing the Philippine Research Reactor-1 TRIGA fuel in a subcritical assembly

Description

The Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) used to operate the Philippine Research Reactor-1 which has been shut down since 1988. Since then, PNRI is in possession of slightly irradiated TRIGA fuel rods that have been in wet storage for 30 years. Recently, PNRI has decided to reuse these fuel rods in a subcritical assembly (SCA) to re-establish nuclear expertise in the Philippines. A subcritical assembly is an ideal nuclear facility for training and basic research for a country like the Philippines, which is restarting a nuclear science and technology program. In this paper, the options considered for PRR-1 that eventually led to the decision of utilizing the TRIGA fuel in an SCA will be discussed. An overview of the SCA design and the utilization plan for the facility will be likewise presented. (author)
